Downton Abbey executive Gareth Neame has reassured viewers that the period drama will perk up following the death of Matthew Crawley in series four, moving in a ‘whole different direction’.

Viewers were stunned on Christmas Day when main character Matthew Crawley was suddenly killed in a car accident.

But Neame says out of death will be born new opportunities.

Lady Mary (Matthew’s bereaved wife) will attempt to ‘rebuild her life’ in the episodes to screen in 2013, he explained to E!

‘This is a lesson in something that seems like a really big loss in the moment, but will actually turn into a great opportunity… which it will also be for the show, to take a turn in a whole different direction.’
